Who Knows My Name?
Don’t we all have some desire to be where people know our name? I’m not talking about heading down to the local bar like an episode of “Cheers” with Gary Portnoy’s classic “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” playing in the background. I mean we want to be known by someone, to feel that intimacy, to know that we are loved, to know our lives matter to someone else. It’s priceless to find that familiarity and sense of comfort we have when we are around people who know more than just our names, but also what makes us tick, our ups and downs, and all our ugliness, but still sticks by us in love.
Do you have those people in your life? A spouse? Family members? A few close friends? That’s great if you do. It certainly makes life here on earth more meaningful to be able to share experiences with others on a deeper level. Many people don’t feel they have those people in their lives. Maybe they once did and broken relationships have brought them to a place of despair and loneliness. Maybe a once intimate relationship feels as if it is lacking in intimacy these days. Wherever you are on this spectrum, it may bring you solace to understand that we have a Creator who knows our name and everything about us. Below you will find the lyrics to a beautiful song called “He Knows My Name” performed by a young Travis Clark. Along with the amazing promises and comfort that comes with the Creator of the universe choosing to know us, the simple yet powerful words in the bridge (He knew who I was when he carried the cross. He knew that I would fail him but he took the loss) say everything about the terms of our relationship. A few Scripture verses that capture this relationship can be found in John chapter 10. It’s worth reading or re-reading the whole passage, but here are a couple verses to sum things up:
I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep…
-John 10:11
…the sheep listen to his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out…
-John 10:3
I know I’ll be just fine, cause He knows my name!

Verse 1
He counts the stars one and all
He knows how much sand is on the shore
He sees every sparrow that falls
He made the mountain and the seas
He's in control of everything
Of all creatures great and small
Chorus
He knows my name
Every step that I take
Every move that I make
Every tear that I cry
And He knows my name
When I'm overwhelmed by the pain
And can't see the light of day
I know ill be just fine
Cause He knows my name
Verse 2
I don't know what tomorrow will bring
I can't tell you what's in store
I don't know a lot of things
I don't have all the answers to the questions of life
But I know in whom I believe
Bridge
He knew who I was when he carried the cross
He knew that I would fail him but he took the loss
